They were spotted having at Palisades last night with Paris's little sister, Nicky. Before that, they partied together last weekend in Malibu, at Paris’s beach house.

One source said, "Paris has known Lindsay since she was 15 years old. The girls have had their falling-outs in the past, but they've put that all behind them. They feel that life is short and they're adults and have been friends way too long to let go."

Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner asked Lindsay Lohan to complete 480 hours of community service by next April and no delaying is allowed, and that she would .

She ordered two martinis from the waitress, but she said they were for a friend. So the waitress brought them out and handed them to her. One of the other girls shot the waitress a look and shook her head as if to say, ‘Don’t give that to her.’”

Witness continues, “But Lindsay took them anyway and took a big gulp out of one of them. About ten minutes later she did a shot of vodka. A guy was sitting on the other side of her poured himself a vodka on the rocks and I saw her take two sips out of it. But she was really careful to only order juice from the staff.”

“By 2am, she could barely stand. She was trying to stabilize herself on the chairs. Then she made it over to the curtains and hung on them. The manager saw this and went over and helped her stand up. She was really nice to the manager. She kept saying, ‘Thank you. All my friends left me.’ Then she picked up her phone and started screaming, ‘Everybody left me! Why did everyone leave me? Where are you?’”

“The manager went back over to her and told her not to worry. ‘I’ll help you. Don’t worry’, I heard the manager say. She eventually got outside, and when she got to her Escalade she just collapsed into it.”

The economics of law school admissions

It is now officially a muckraking crusade.

Three times this calendar year, David Segal of the New York Times has commanded the front page of the Sunday business section with an exposé of the business of law schools. First, he assailed the economic rationality of anyone electing to study law. Then came his attack on the use of deceptive scholarship awards to attract students and boost rankings. Now comes a more comprehensive broadside against the economics of law school admissions:

Legal diplomas have such allure that law schools have been able to jack up tuition four times faster than the soaring cost of college. And many law schools have added students to their incoming classes — a step that, for them, means almost pure profits — even during the worst recession in the legal profession’s history.

Meanwhile, David Leonhardt of the Times writes that the Great Recession refuses to ease into a renewed cycle of job growth because nothing has emerged to replace the economic model of consumer spending and easy debt that fueled the collapse in the first place.

The task of discerning the validity of these critiques and, if appropriate, applying the lessons learned to the project of reforming legal education is left as an exercise for the reader.

California companies continue to flee state over taxes, regulatory environment

CNN ran another article on businesses leaving California for more favorable tax and regulatory climates. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is promising an economic development plan soon, but the bad news for most of my clients and for the state's economic prospects is that they are unlikely to be assisted by it, in that it appears it wiltarget only specific industries and even then likely primarily larger and more politically connected companies:

Newsom's plan will focus on California's premier industries, including biotechnology, agriculture and digital media. It will highlight the state's strengths in innovation and research and cultivate more manufacturing and exports. It also will examine how to address executives' concerns about regulation, taxes and layers of bureaucracy.
